Sylvia Gaston

Sylvia Joyce Gaston was born in Doerun, Georgia, on January 9, 1939, to proud parents Alga Roy and Eddie Sue Mitchell. A devoted military wife, she raised five children with love and care and later on worked at Harris Communication in Palm Bay, Florida. After she retired, she and her husband, Samuel Gaston, moved to Steinhatchee in 1984 where she became a beloved member of the community and The First Baptist Church in Steinhatchee, Florida. She was a talented artist, an avid reader, and enjoyed spending time crocheting, but she was happiest when surrounded by her loved ones as her greatest joy was her family and friends. Sylvia passed away on July 7, 2026, at the age of 87 in her home in Ocala, Florida. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Samuel M. Gaston, with whom she shared twenty-seven wonderful years of marriage and her sisters Janice Morrow and Bonnie Staton. She is lovingly survived by her brother Henry Fred Mitchell Sr. of Steinhatchee, Fl and her sister Alga Royce Green, of Fort Walton Beach, Fl. She is also survived by her five children: Deborah Luwynn Garmley of Ocala, Fl; Robert Sanders Edgerton III of Hoschton, Ga; James Christopher Edgerton of Madisonville, La; Timothy Eugene Edgerton of Ponchatoula, La; Michael Scott Edgerton of Crawfordville, Fl and by her three stepdaughters: Deborah Greenway of Suwanee, Ga; Carla Salsburg and Anita Cofelice of Melbourne, Fl. A proud grandmother and great-grandmother, Sylvia "Me-Ma" leaves behind twenty grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews, all of whom will cherish her memory. Those we love don't go away; they walk beside us every day. A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at First Baptist Church of Steinhatchee with Pastor Timothy Holden officiating. Interment will follow at Waters Memorial Gardens in Steinhatchee. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
