Larrell Thomas

Larrell Travis Thomas, 84, passed away on July 28, 2024, in Ft. White, Florida, surrounded by loved ones. Born on March 3, 1940, in Clearwater, South Carolina, he had a life marked by service to his community and devotion to his faith. His commitment to service was evident early on as he served in the Air Force before embarking on a career in law enforcement. He briefly worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C. Larrell was a graduate of the University of Florida, where he earned a degree in Forestry, but chose to continue his career in law enforcement. Larrell dedicated 32 years to the Gainesville Police Department, retiring in 2002. A devout Christian, Larrell was actively involved in his church, where he served on various committees and enjoyed singing in the choir and performing solos. His love for music extended beyond the church as he played guitar in the Annasemble Community Orchestra. Larrell loved his country, his church, his family, watching and feeding birds, kayaking, traveling and his cat Atticus Finch. In addition, he had a strong interest in military and remote-control airshows. He is survived by his wife, Laura Thomas; five children, Troy Thomas (Jeannie), Vonda Barber (Bill), Cary Thomas (Connie), Tanya Moss (David), and Tammy Thomas; ten grandchildren, Garrett, Emily, Kyle, Lindsey, Austin, Jacob, Aaron, Spencer, Ashley, and Ella; and five great-grandchildren, Zoey, Kammie, Rosey, Kade, and Westley. He also leaves behind his mother-in-law Jeanne Greenfield, two brothers, Bruce and Phillip Thomas, and a sister, Sheryle Palmer. Larrell was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Irma Thomas, and a sister, Shelby Brown. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, High Springs, Florida. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Haven Hospice or Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, children and youth ministries.
