Joe Ann Jones

Joe Ann Jones passed away on February 25, 2023 at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. She was born on April 20, 1933 in Foley, Florida to Mallory Horne “Teet” and Laura Mae Brannen. She grew up in Cross City where she received her elementary and high school education. In 1951 Joe Ann went to Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida. While there she met Lloyd Jones of Mayo, Florida and they were married on October 21, 1954. Joe Ann graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education. For the next thirty-five years she taught Kindergarten, first grade and remedial reading in the Dixie County Public Schools. Upon retirement she enjoyed researching the genealogy of the Brannen and Jones families. She especially enjoyed spending time with her three grandchildren. Joe Ann was a member of First Baptist Church of Cross City where she served as church organist and as a Sunday School teacher. As a musician, she played for many weddings and funerals in Dixie County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Jones and her son, Michael Rex Jones. She is survived by her sons, David L. Jones and Kendall Jones, both of Cross City; her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Ron Burns of Oviedo, Florida; her grandchildren, Jordan (Jon) Samuelson, Kirsten (Michael) DuPre, both of Orlando, Florida, and Reiner Burns of Brooklyn, New York; and one great-grandson. She is also survived by her sister, Lena Bessinger of Gulf Breeze, Florida; her brother, William Brannen of Jacksonville, Florida; her nephew, Michael Bessinger of Van Nuys, California, and her niece, Laura Morse of West Palm Beach, Florida. A service for Mrs. Jones will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at Cross City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends and family are asked to consider donations to the following organizations: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; the Dixie County Scholarship Fund; or the Florida Children’s Home.
