Joe Hubert Allen

Joe Hubert Allen, 82, of Cross City, Florida, died peacefully at his home on March 13, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. He was born December 23, 1943, to Leon P. Allen and Josie Hatch Allen. Hubert’s first job was shining shoes in his father’s barber shop. He later worked at the local drugstore and for the Dixie County School System. A 1961 graduate of Dixie County High School, he attended Massey Business School and earned a degree in Finance and Accounting. After holding several jobs out of state, he returned to Dixie County and ran for Clerk of Court in 1976. Elected to the position, he took office in January 1977 and served for 28 years before retiring in December 2005. He loved his work as Clerk and was known for going out of his way to help anyone who needed assistance. Hubert cared deeply for others and made sure his parents were well cared for; he visited his mother daily while she was at Ayers Nursing Home. A devout Christian, he often shared scripture with many people, and his faith led some to salvation. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, exploring the woods, photography and dining out—trying both favorites and new restaurants. He especially loved visits to the Smoky Mountains and riding through Cades Cove. He is survived by his sister Phyllis Allen White (Charles), sisters-in-law Barbara Allen and Pat Allen, numerous nieces and nephews, and his caregivers Cindy Dey, and Nikki Cook. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon P. and Josie H. Allen, and brothers Dennis Allen and Ashley Allen. A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday March 21, 2026 at the Rick Gooding Funeral Home Cross City Chapel with visitation one hour beforehand. Interment will follow at Old McCrabb Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Haven Hospice. The family will receive visitors on Friday evening, March 20th, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 565 NE 214th Avenue, Cross City, FL.
