Jerry Hill

Jerry Wayne Hill, 76, passed away on April 14, 2025 with his loving wife, Faith, by his side, and following an extended visit with his daughter, Carrie (Garrett) and granddaughters, Savannah and McKayla. He would have considered that a fine, fine day. Jerry was born at home in Cross City to Perry and Mattie Lou Hill, on October 27, 1948. Following his DCHS high school graduation, he attended Lake City Community College and was drafted into the US Army at the age of 19 in May 1968. He completed Basic Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Although it was not his intention to become a soldier, he did not complain, and never has. Once he was called to serve, he did so with honor and pride. He ended up working on a Gunner Vulcan Air Defense System in White Sands, New Mexico. He was honorably discharged at the end of his tenure. Following his marriage, he and his wife relocated to Jacksonville, where he received his Business degree from Jones Business College. Jerry owned and operated Hill & Cobb Insurance Agency for thirty six years in Cross City, working alongside his beloved daughter. As an agent, he received many awards, including the distinguished title of Master Underwriter for Cotton States Insurance Company. He took his role as an insurance agent very seriously, and was an entrusted business owner in our community. His greatest reward however, was found in the role of “Papa.” He added a nursery to his office, and served the public with his granddaughters, first Savannah and then McKayla, playing alongside his desk. He often said that his girls were his “world.” Jerry enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Ramsey Bend Hunting Club. He loved his hunting trips with his nephews, Joe and Dewey, dispensing homespun advice, and drinking coffee. His grouper fishing trips with Garrett are legendary. He often received the “VIP treatment,” on their excursions as he aged, requesting, “take that fish off, my good man!” Jerry was also a Shriner, and a member of the Dixie County Rotary Club until his retirement. He served as a Dixie County Commissioner during the Storm of the Century, and enjoyed helping people in need. Jerry was a member of Rock Sink Baptist Church in Old Town, where he enjoyed the fellowship. He loved the Lord and he loved his family. His quick wit and sense of humor is unmatched. He will be greatly missed here on this earth. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 17, 2025 at the Rick Gooding Funeral Home Cross City Chapel with Pastor Al Paulson and Pastor Joe Brooks officiating. Interment will follow at the Cross City Cemetery. Jerry’s visitation will be Wednesday evening, April 16, 2025 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home.
