Evelyn McGehee Etheredge Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Evelyn McGehee Etheredge of Chiefland Florida, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Haven Hospice from complications of COVID. She was 100 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, B.T. Etheredge, and son, Byron Etheredge. She is survived by her son, Bradley Etheredge (Lucy) of Homosassa, Florida, and daughters, Beverly Lowe (Ricky) of Chiefland, Florida and Brenda Callen (Phillip) of Virginia, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Evelyn was born May 18, 1922, in Newberry, Florida to Clarence and Mary McGehee. She attended Berry College and received a degree in Home Economics in 1946 from the University of Georgia. She began working at Chiefland High School as a home economics teacher but later changed to elementary education as a 2nd grade teacher. Evelyn retired in 1983 after a 30 plus year career in education. She married local farmer and WWII vet, B.T. Etheredge, on April 16, 1948. They were former members at Hardeetown Baptist Church and later active members at First Baptist Church of Chiefland. Evelyn enjoyed weekly activities with the Methodist Women’s group and First Baptist Senior Adults. She received many accolades for her work in the Chiefland Civitan Club and served as president from 1989-90. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, active with the Levy County Log Cabin Quilters and had a passion for sewing. Evelyn volunteered at the Dudley Farm Historic State Park where she donated hundreds of handmade bonnets for them to sell in their general store. She recalled playing with the Dudley sisters at the farm many times as a child. Evelyn and B.T. enjoyed square dancing with the Levy County Clover Squares during the 80’s. After retirement she continued working on the family farm well into her 90’s. This was curtailed somewhat after driving her tractor into a newly formed sinkhole and the keys had to be taken. Her final years were spent contently sitting in a rocking chair watching her grandchildren and directing activities from the porch. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Chiefland, 511 N. Young Blvd. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church
